Have you often been without canned cream of chicken soup for a recipe?

This is a straight forward recipe for cream of chicken soup substitute. I actually prefer it to the canned stuff. It’s even been used as a chicken gravy — which I highly recommend!

In addition to that, my mother has found the trigger to her migraines is caused by MSG and canned cream of chicken soup contains high enough levels that she can’t eat it. So I have had to find homemade versions of everything I cook for her. It’s probably a bit healthier that way anyway!

This is great when added to casserole dishes like cheesy ham and potatoes.

A creamy and savory soup made from chicken broth.


  • 1 cup Chicken Broth

  • 1/4 cup Flour

  • 1/4 cup Milk

  • 1 tsp Salt

  • 1/4 tsp Pepper


  • Bring chicken broth to a boil in a small saucepan. Reduce to a simmer.
  • Whisk flour into milk in a small bowl and whisk into chicken broth.
  • Add salt and pepper and continue stirring for 1 minute. Remove from stove and allow to cool. Soup will continue to thicken as it cools.
